Penmanship is carved into plywood, a material made of thin layers pressed together—much like the layers of handwriting traditions built over centuries. The wood carries its own grain, its own quiet script, a natural calligraphy written long before human hands ever touched it. In this piece, the surface becomes a stand‑in for the page, a reminder of the tactile world we’re slowly losing.

The work speaks to the fading art of writing by hand. Once, penmanship was a discipline, a craft, a form of personal expression. Cursive flowed like a river continuous, elegant, unbroken. It taught rhythm, patience, and the subtle dance between pressure and release. Every loop, flourish, and tail carried personality. A person’s handwriting was their fingerprint in motion. 

Today, that river has been dammed by keyboards. Letters arrive not through movement but through tapping—uniform, mechanical, identical. The intimacy of handwriting has been replaced by the efficiency of typing. Cursive, once a rite of passage, is now an endangered script. Schools quietly remove it from curricula. Children grow up fluent in swipes and taps but unable to read the handwriting of their grandparents.

Penmanship holds this tension. The plywood becomes a metaphor for the notebook that no longer gets opened, the desk where no one sits to write, the exercise book where cursive once curled across the page. The marks on the wood echo the gestures of handwritingscratches, strokes, hesitations each one a reminder of the physicality of writing, the way the hand once shaped thought.
