Boxers and Pugilists are a recurring subject in my artistic practice, with a particular focus on bare-knuckle fighters from the 18th and 19th centuries. These historical figures operate as metaphors within the work, reflecting aspects of my own identity and my relationship to the world.
Boxers and artists exist in parallel worlds. Despite the apparent differences in their disciplines, both are driven by intense individual performance, personal risk, discipline, and the desire for recognition. Each stands alone under scrutiny, defined by resilience, endurance, and the need to be seen for who they truly are. Of particular importance are the Black boxers of the 18th century, many of whom were formerly enslaved men. Through physical strength, strategy, and courage, they fought not only in the ring but toward autonomy and freedom. Their stories carry themes of resistance, survival, and self-determination that continue to resonate today.
